Balancing work, family, and all the things in between can be overwhelming. Figuring out a weekly cleaning schedule as a working mom has eliminated unnecessary stress and given me the gift of time to focus on more important things…like being a mom.
Maintaining a clean and clutter-free home is important for many reasons. It’s a great feeling coming home after a long day of work to a house that looks and feels clean.
In recent years there’s been evidence to support that having a clean house can help eliminate stress and anxiety. According to a study conducted at Princeton University in 2011, a visually cluttered environment contributes to an increased chance you won’t be able to focus on particular tasks. A blog post in Psychology Today, The Powerful Psychology Behind Cleanliness, digs deeper into this fascinating finding if you’d like to read more.
In addition to the psychological benefits of living in a clean house, there are also health benefits outlined in a blog post written by health enews. These include (but not limited to) increased physical fitness, reduced allergy and asthma symptoms, improved safety, lessening the spread of germs, reduction in waist lines, improved diet and lowering stress and fatigue.
So now that we know all of the benefits to living in a clean home, let’s get started!
Before We Begin
I should be begin by letting you know that this weekly cleaning schedule for working moms assumes that your house is already picked-up from the week. This means that countertops are cleared of any paper clutter, backpacks and lunch boxes are put away, shoes and coats are in closets and other regularly used items are out of sight.
If you need help during the week to keep your house tidy, read my post here on 5 Daily Habits to Keep your House Clean.
The following list provides a simple schedule that can be implemented once a week or broken down into areas of the house to be cleaned each day. I personally like to do the weekly cleaning at once so that I can focus on other things throughout the week. I also enjoy the feeling I get when I know the entire house is clean.
If time is limited on the weekends with other activities, I will start cleaning Thursday night and do a little on Friday after work and Saturday morning. Usually by Saturday morning I have finished most of the cleaning. This schedule for me is not my preferred method of getting the cleaning done but it works and the time spent to have a clean house is worth it.

Enlist the Help of Others
Now that my own kids are older, they are responsible for vacuuming and dusting their own bedrooms, making their beds, taking out the trash, helping with the laundry and keeping their belongings put away. Don’t forget to include your spouse as well. Dividing and conquering the weekly chores is how it all gets done.

Tips
- If cleaning the entire house at once is too much, focus on one or two rooms a day or on a single chore. You may choose to vacuum the entire house one day and dust the next. The secret to maintaining a cleaning schedule is to do what works for you.
- Vacuum before you dust as the vacuum will spread dust everywhere.
- Mop the floors last.
- Use microfiber cloths to wipe down stainless steel appliances. You won’t get the streaks you’ll get when you use cleaner.
- Don’t leave a room empty-handed. Take a load of laundry, take out the trash, put away cleaning supplies, put away clean clothes…whatever you can do to save time.
- Keep cleaning supplies in one place in a caddy. Don’t forget to add microfiber clothes for dusting.
