Clutter is the number one reason we feel overwhelmed by a messy house. If everywhere you look there’s something that doesn’t belong, it begins to clutter your thoughts and can make you feel anxious. Read on to find out how to keep your house decluttered using this one tip.

I have adopted this one trick to keeping our house decluttered and it’s ridiculously easy.

What is it you ask?

I simply don’t leave a room with my hands empty.

Why it Works

Let me explain. If I go upstairs to take a load of laundry to put away, before I come back downstairs I may gather all the breakfast dishes that need to be put in the dishwasher. Sometimes it’s trash that needs to be put in the recycling bin, a load of laundry or papers that need filed.

The idea is to use time wisely. If I’m already upstairs, I might as well do something while I’m up there that will eventually need to be done anyways. It’s so easy and fast, it doesn’t take any additional time out of my day to keep the house straightened up.

It immediately makes the house feel neater and cleaner. In addition, I find that I don’t misplace important papers or lose items because they’re stuck somewhere in the middle of a pile no where to be found (at least not until it’s too late).

Decluttering is Needed Now More than Ever

Now that we’ve all been home for almost five months our house never gets a break. We are ALWAYS here to make a mess. Gone now are the days of leaving for work and school with the house in (some kind of) order.

We our living our days helping the kids complete school work while trying to keep up with the demands of our jobs all while learning how to live in a virtual world. That means we have laptops, books and papers in almost every room of our house. Not to mention dishes. Lots and lots of dishes (if you have kids at home during this pandemic you probably know exactly what I’m talking about).

Clutter collects quickly but it can also be removed quickly if done on a regular basis. It takes no time at all to gather items and put them back where they belong as long as you have a place for everything.

One idea to help speed-up the decluttering process is to take a basket with you and fill it up with everything that needs to be put back in its place. That way, you only need to take one trip to each room to clear it of the clutter.

When you do have time to clean, you won’t have to spend extra time decluttering your house because it will already be done. In my post How to Quickly Clean your House, I share with you how to speed clean your house by focusing on a few simple chores that make the biggest impact.

However, in order to be able to quickly clean your house, you will need to keep your house decluttered. Otherwise, you’ll spend additional time putting things away and straightening-up instead of cleaning.
